The Alarming Cost of Cutting Science: A Threat to Our Future

April 4, 2025.

Investing in Science is a Commitment to Future Generations.

The recent New York Times article highlights the alarming dismantling of the U.S. research enterprise under the current administration, with devastating consequences for the next generation of scientists. Billions of dollars in federal scientific research grants have been rescinded or suspended, jeopardizing critical advancements in areas like cancer research, vaccine development, and climate science.

To those who think U.S. investment in science is too expensive, consider the alternative. Studies estimate that for every dollar of NIH funding, $2.56 in economic activity is produced—a return few other investments can match. Beyond economics, investing in science is a commitment to the future of our children and society as a whole.

On a personal note, as someone who has directly benefited from NIH investments in my professional training, I recognize that our important work at Alloplex would not have been possible without the generous support of federal funding. It afforded me opportunities to contribute back to the country and society that has given me so much.

The damage being perpetrated now on the next generation of scientists will not only deny them similar opportunities but also deprive our country of future top-notch researchers and the economic engine they power. As senior scientists retire, leadership in various scientific endeavors risks migrating to other countries—a shift that will be difficult, if not impossible, to reverse.

Cuts to research funding are not just an attack on science; they are an attack on innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness. The consequences will be felt for decades to come unless we recommit to supporting scientific progress and fostering the next generation of researchers who will lead us into a brighter and more prosperous future.
